On March 16, 2016 a panel discussion on the future of U.S. – Latin America relations took place to mark the launch of Georgetown University’s Latin America Initiative.
Ambassador Thomas Shannon, Undersecretary for Political Affairs and former U.S. Ambassador to Brazil, engaged in conversation with Samuel Lewis, the former Vice President of Panama and Chairman of Georgetown’s Latin American Board about his outlook on hemispheric relations while Professor Ricardo Ernst, Managing Director of the Latin American Board, moderated the discussion.
Both Shannon and Lewis emphasized the progress and development of the region in terms of its economic growth, its insertion into the global economy and the potential of young people to shape the social and political agendas of countries, while also acknowledging persistent problems with inequality, corruption and poverty.
